We cordially invite you to the prize ceremony of the Sharing Tapio Wirkkala Rut Bryk Foundation Idea Competition on the 2nd of June at 11 a.m.
Tapio Wirkkala Rut Bryk Foundation and EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art are pleased to announce the winners of the Sharing Tapio Wirkkala Rut Bryk Archive Competition. The competition was an open international idea concept competition for the future foundation archive.
The Foundation currently maintains the archive Tapio Wirkkala and Rut Bryk, a collection of over 5000 items. Ranging from final products to preliminary sketches and models, the scope and variety of the collection makes it challenging to exhibit in a cohesive form. The Sharing Idea Competition called for competitors to consider how an archive can open up its contents, to create a context, to relate with the world. The competition challenges the existing paradigm for museums and archives and considers new possibilities for an archive to become a place for sharing, exploring and cultivating a discourse on design.
To consider the design archive as an accessible and relatable public establishment, means to fundamentally reflect on the role of design itself and how it relates to the general public. Therefore competitors were asked to consider the changing definitions of design and to establish a position on the relationship between design and society today.

EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art is one of the most important art museums in Finland. Located in the architecturally significant WeeGee building designed by Professor Aarno Ruusuvuori, EMMA’s exhibition space is the largest in Finland. The remarkable exhibition venue enables the realization of experience-focused exhibitions of EMMA’s collection, the Saastamoinen Foundation Art Collection, changing exhibitions and design. Through its collection and exhibition activities, EMMA profiles itself as a museum of Finnish and international modernism, contemporary art, and design. EMMA is located in the WeeGee Exhibition Centre in Tapiola, Espoo.
Established in 2003, the Tapio Wirkkala Rut Bryk Foundation works to maintain the Wirkkala/Bryk collection, to support research and to promote exhibitions and publications. The Foundation’s goal of establishing a permanent venue for the collection will be fulfilled in 2017, when the collection will be placed in the WeeGee building. At the end of 2015, the City of Espoo, EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art and the Tapio Wirkkala Rut Bryk Foundation signed an agreement to permanently display the collection in the WeeGee Exhibition Centre as part of EMMA. The purpose of the agreement is to ensure that this nationally valuable collection will be preserved and maintained and that the works are displayed for the public. The new venue and collection display boost EMMA’s profile in the field of design. Through this world-class collection, EMMA will be able to provide the public an even more varied range of exhibitions. Moreover, displaying the collection is seen as a way to enhance the popularity of the WeeGee Centre in general. The aim is to make it a globally interesting activity centre, with a broad display of modern design.
