On evening Oct 8 Finnish photographer Markus Kiili was shooting auroras by the lake Äkäslompolo, Lapland, Finland. He was shooting for time-lapse video, when extremely strong auroras appeared.

”I have never before seen so bright pink auroras before and I have seen quite many auroras” says Mr. Kiili. He lives at small village called Äkäslompolo 200 km north from polar circle. Äkäslompolo is part of Ylläs ski area, familiar for many European tourist. Normally Northern Lights are green at Lapland, but sometimes when they are very strong you can see different colors.

At Ylläs in Finnish Lapland aurora season has started very well. Already in September there was over 10 aurora nights. At Ylläs they take auroras seriously.  The street lights will be turned off in Ylläs every evening at 10 p.m. starting 1.10.2014 until 13.2.2015. This will make it easier for you to see the Northern Lights. The Northern Lights can be seen in the northern part of the sky late in the evening, when the sky is clear. On Northern Lights storm night you can see those in every direction. Along with Northern Lights, the stars, moon and snow illuminate the nights. Turning lights off will also help to reduce our Carbon Footprint in Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park.
