Ernils Larsson får Donnerska institutets forskarpris 2020
Teologie doktor i religionshistoria Ernils Larsson tilldelas Donnerska institutets forskarpris 2020 för sin doktorsavhandling Rituals of a Secular Nation: Shinto Normativity and the Separation of Religion and State in Postwar Japan.
Ernil Larssons doktorsavhandling Rituals of a Secular Nation: Shinto Normativity and the Separation of Religion and State in Postwar Japan finns tillgänglig bland annat i Donnerska institutets forskningsbibliotek.

Ernils Larsson receives Donner Institute Research Prize 2020
Doctor of Theology in the History of Religions Ernils Larsson is awarded the Donner Institute’s 2020 research prize for his doctoral thesis Rituals of a Secular Nation: Shinto Normativity and the Separation of Religion and State in Postwar Japan. Larsson received his PhD from Uppsala University in February, and his thesis deals with the relationship between state and religion in Japan, based on how the nation’s courts reason in legal disputes related to Shinto. Shinto was the state religion of Japan until World War II, and to this day, a question remains of whether the faith should be treated as a religious opinion or a national identity.
- Religion and law are an exciting field of research, not least because it raises the question of who has the right to define religion. What happens when different views on how religion should be understood meet in court proceedings that require straight answers? The legal cases that I have worked with reflect a larger conflict over Japanese identity, with great relevance to the political development in the country, says Larsson.
Larsson’s doctoral thesis was one of eight research publications nominated for the Donner Institute’s research prize. Since 2010, the research prize, worth 5,000 euros, has been awarded annually to a prominent researcher in the study of religions at a Nordic university. Larsson also received a doctoral scholarship from the Donner Institute in 2019 to complete the doctoral thesis that is now being awarded.
The Board of the Institute notes the following in its prize motivation:
“Larsson’s research has been carefully conducted. His material is written in Japanese. It is therefore a demanding task for a Nordic researcher. His analyses are solid and appropriately motivated. The work is pedagogically well-structured. It is easy for the reader to imagine the situation in postwar Japan that is relevant to the purpose of the book. In the last chapter, Larsson conducts an important critical discussion about the possibilities of using the term ‘religion’ in a meaningful way in legislation. He thus touches on conceptual issues that the ongoing discussion on post-secularity raises.”
The Donner Institute for Research in Religion and Culture is a private research institute in connection with Åbo Akademi University Foundation. The Institute’s activities fall within two main areas: research and library activities. The Institute’s research library is the largest in its field in the Nordic region and is open to the public. The research focuses on the field of religion in a broad sense.
Ernils Larsson’s doctoral thesis Rituals of a Secular Nation: Shinto Normativity and the Separation of Religion and State in Postwar Japan is available in the Donner Institute’s research library.
