The European Union’s new regulation on roaming fees comes into force in mid-June, and will make the use of mobile phones within the EU considerably cheaper. New subscription options will also become available, both for consumers and business customers. All the options will provide for phone use abroad. Elisa wants to allow its customers to choose the pricing option that best suits their needs.
Elisa will launch its new subscription types* at the beginning of June. These include calls and messages at domestic prices in all EU and European Economic Area (EEA) countries. In addition, these subscriptions will include unlimited data usage in the Nordic countries (Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark) and Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania), and also a large amount of data use per month in the other EU and EEA countries.
- We will be selling new types of subscriptions to allow customers to choose the most appropriate pricing method for their own use when travelling abroad. Customers can either continue with the current model and pay according to the amount of usage, or switch to a new model with a monthly subscription fee that includes use in the EU, says Henri Korpi, Elisa’s vice president for consumer subscription business.
Sweden and Estonia are the favourite EU destinations for tourists from Finland, for both work and leisure.
-Our new subscription types are extremely competitive, and we believe that they will be very attractive to consumers and business customers alike. It is a significant advantage for Finnish residents to be able to use their phones in neighbouring countries without fear of additional costs, Korpi continues.
Elisa has built a model ensuring the continuity of unlimited subscriptions, which are exceptional on an European level, remain in Finland, although the roaming prices decrease significantly in Europe at the same time.
Lower EU roaming fees from mid-June onwards
Alongside its new subscription types, Elisa will also be reducing its basic rates for calls, messages and data usage within the EU and EEA countries. This change applies to all Elisa customers.
- The lower roaming fees will certainly increase data usage in particular. Once the changes come into effect, price will no longer be an obstacle to using your phone in other EU countries, no matter which of our pricing models the customer uses, Korpi explains.
Elisa reached its decision on the new pricing models due to customer feedback. Including more foreign usage in the subscriptions is an advantage for those who regularly travel abroad, and for those who travel to other EU countries less frequently, usage-based pricing is often more economical.
As of 15 June 2017, Elisa customer prices ** will be lowered in the EU and EEA countries as follows: data -88%, SMS messages -50%, and calls -36%. There will be no fee for receiving calls.
