Finnish Shared Network Ltd, a company jointly owned by DNA Plc and Telia Finland Oyj, will start building a new 5G network in northern and eastern Finland in cooperation with Nokia. The three-year construction project will start in early 2021.
According to the cooperation agreement published today, a very comprehensive 5G network will be built in northern and eastern Finland. All the base stations in the new network will be entirely new, so 5G can be implemented on all spectrum managed by Telia and DNA instead of adding a single band on top of the old network.
Combining DNA’s and Telia’s spectrum enables higher data transfer speeds in 5G compared to using only one operator’s network, as was the case with 4G as well.
“The 5G network will now be available anywhere we have base station sites. This will clearly improve the availability and throughput of services in northern and eastern Finland,” says CEO Antti Jokinen from Finnish Shared Network Ltd.
The exceptional circumstances of 2020 have clearly accelerated the ever-increasing use of mobile networks and proved how crucial it is to provide reliable and high-capacity connections for remote work. The capacity of the new 5G network is many times higher compared to the old network. In the connection of the change, the capacity of the region’s 4G network will also increase significantly.
The project also takes into account the security of supply.
“In addition to construction, the maintenance and monitoring of the network will also mainly be carried out in Finland,” Jokinen continues.
