Giving grain and animal farmers more control over the quality, cost and pricing of their produce.
Bringing the grain quality measurement practice to the farm level
GrainSense has developed the world’s first truly hand-held device for grain quality measurement. The GrainSense hand-held device measures the protein, moisture, oil and carbohydrate content of cereals and other crops – i.e. key determinants of the harvest value and processing cost. The device is battery powered, requires only a few grains and takes just seconds to make each measurement. The service includes a mobile application with GPS positioning and cloud connection, which supports a suite of value-added services for improving productivity and profitability. The device is competitively priced and is affordable by individuals.
Affordable for individual farmers
GrainSense is the first grain quality measurement device that is affordable and field durable enough to be owned and used by farmers. The end-user international sales price will be 3.900 euro (tax 0%), including device, carry bag, measure cup, cap and 1 year warranty. A personal user account is needed for the use of the device; 250 euro/year (tax 0%), includes 4 grain species, updates and calibrations, unlimited data storage and possibility to share the measurement results.
Laboratory accuracy from field in seconds
For the first time, farmers, seed producers and plant breeders will be able to rapidly measure the key parameters of their crops in the field (even before harvesting) and make decisions that can significantly improve their productivity and profitability. The device will also enable meat producers to control and adjust the protein content of feed in real time, which can have a major impact on profitability.
The unique features of GrainSense are:
Sales through distributors
GrainSense device will be introduced in spring 2018 on the Swedish, Finnish and Baltic markets, through distributor partner Berner Oy. The grain species initially available are wheat, barley, oats and rye. Rapeseed will follow. GrainSense is looking for suitable distributors for the sales on the European market 2019 and beyond. Please contact company CEO for enquires.
Big interest among the farming community
The GrainSense solution has been developed in close collaboration with individual farmers and farming organizations. The feedback from farmers has confirmed that currently there are no suitable tools available to support farm-level decision-making in order to manage and optimize the protein content of crops. Wherever the GrainSense solution has been introduced, we have seen exceptionally strong interest in testing and pre-ordering.
Patented measurement principle
The development of a small, battery-operated, handheld and low-cost device with hardware performance similar to that of expensive research-grade spectrometers has been possible thanks to our innovations in the field of optical sampling. GrainSense holds two patents and several patent applications.
GrainSense device is based on an optical detection module and supporting mechanics and electronics with a Bluetooth connection to a mobile device. The technical principle of the device is based on near infrared (NIR) absorbance spectroscopy. This technique has been available in labs for years, but GrainSense is the first that has been able to incorporate it into a handheld device.
Working principle: To make a measurement, the user first takes a reference measurement using an empty sphere for a baseline and then loads the grain kernels onto the holder glass and measures the sample filtered response. From these two measurements, the absorbance cross section (ACS) of the kernels can be determined, and then multivariate calibration algorithms are used to deduce from the measured ACS spectrum the concentrations of protein, carbohydrates, oil, and moisture.

GrainSense – we help farmers through science
GrainSense has developed the world’s first hand-held device for grain quality measurement. For the first time, farmers, seed producers and plant breeders will be able to instantly and rapidly measure the key parameters of their crops in the field and make decisions that can improve profitability. We are bringing a major improvement to food supply chain. Our hand-held device measures the protein, moisture, oil, and carbohydrate content of cereal grains and other crops. The service utilizes GPS positioning and offers cloud based big data services.
