Itsepuolustaitojen oppimisen kerrotaan vievän pitkän ajan ja ainoastaan tuhansien toistojen jälkeen saavutetaan riittävä taito. May the skill be with you – kirja esittelee uuden tavan ajatella ja toteuttaa itsepuolustusharjoittelua siten, että taidon oppimiseen ei todellakaan mene vuosia.
May the skill be with you, is a guide for fast -track learning of self-defense and martial arts. It guides you through the physical and psychological aspects of the self-defense training, covers the tactics and decision-making, and leads you to the fast-track training methods. Based on the author’s 30-years of experience in coaching and martial arts, and the recent study of the ecological dynamics and the constraints-led approach, the myths of "10.000 hours" etc. will vanish.
In this book, I will give you a step-by-step guide on how to make your self- defense training (at least) 10 times faster than any traditional training method. The best part is that you can do it by yourself, with a training partner and best of course, if you are teaching others.
We all learn at different pace and somewhat take advantages of different senses; some of us need more kinetic approach, learning by doing, when some take it in by seeing, and some by hearing. Of course, the usual pathway is a combination of all different elements. We will go through the pitfalls of the main-stream linear pedagogy compared to the non-linear, constraint-led approach and how to use that to accelerate your learning in self-defense!
Whatever is your primary learning method, or should I say, method of understanding what needs to be achieved, the process in learning to do something is the same. This cognitive, verbal-motor stage, process is where we create an understanding of what we are supposed to do to solve that problem. The most important part is that we really understand the whole problem, not just a part of it, say a kick or a punch or a grab. We’ll have to understand the attackers’ intentions should we not respond to the threat correctly. Once we go forward putting all actions together, or associate them, we are consciously trying to perform what is needed. In this phase it is very important to bring in the latest skill-acquisition methods and use the constraint-led approach to start better understanding how we can use the basic “tools”, such as kicking, punching, grabbling etc. ourselves. It makes me sad to see people staying at the same level for years and not getting any better. You’ll have to fail a bit in training, or you won’t develop! To push the limits is the key. Making the attacker(s) do something out of the ordinary to startle you and force you to take that “invitation” to respond with what you have in your nervous system. This leads to an autonomous stage, where your brain knows exactly what to do once you let it.
In the chapter two we’ll investigate learning. After this we’ll move on to the context of self-defense and then add some psychological aspects that need to be covered in training as well as some theory of the tactics and physiology. The key takeaway from the first five chapters is that all those psychological, and physiological elements must be integrated into the learning and training process.
The next part of the book is about physical side of self-defense. What are the common motives behind the training and how we can reach those targets fast. To compare the traditional, mainstream, teaching methods and the fast track, constraint -led approach, we will investigate some pitfalls of the traditional training. In this part I will touch a little bit about capacity building and human physiology, although the focus is on fast-track learning where we will get in chapter seven.
The chapter eight is about feedback. How we understand feedback and how we can 10x the understanding of feedback by using modern tools and technology. What used to be books and VHS and online videos, will turn into instant feed- back systems. We don’t develop skill without timely and consistent feedback. The last part of the book is about systemizing the training and learning.
Enjoy!
