Satu Rämö's popular detective book series set in Iceland will have its premiere at Turku City Theatre's Main Stage from November 7, 2024. Hildur will be played by Asta Sveholm. Tickets for the play adapted by Satu Rasila and directed by Anne Rautiainen are now on sale.
So far, the three-part Hildur series has raised a wide Icelandic boom in a couple of years. The story appeals to both detective fans and those interested in the mystical island and the human mind. The book series, which has become one of Finland's best sellers, is now being shown in real life for the first time.
Asta Sveholm takes on the role of detective Hildur. Sveholm, who grew up in an acting family in Helsinki, last performed at Oulu Theatre, and now her arrival at Turku City Theatre brings her to work on the banks of the river Aura for the first time. Sveholm accepted the role excitedly, although at first she thought that Hildur was too cool a character for her as an actor. Then she discovered the trauma and loneliness beneath Hildur’s cold surface.
"I want to make a female character who is not just a tough and assertive person. I want to include vulnerability, love and warmth, so that Hildur's humanity would show through me. So you shouldn’t expect a superhero," Sveholm describes.
The play, adapted from three novels, takes place in the Icelandic village of Ísafjörður, where detective Hildur Rúnarsdóttir investigates a series of murders with her Finnish colleague Jakob. Working in Iceland's missing children's unit is not happenstance, Hildur's own sisters disappeared without a trace as children. Now there are brutal murders to solve, which seem to be connected only by the old folk tale about the 13 Santa Clauses. When clues emerge from Hildur's past, a group of secrets begin to unravel. Author Satu Rämö describes the genre of the detective story as not as Nordic Noir, but Nordic Blue.
Milja Salovaara, a set designer who lives in Norway, will serve her own vision of Iceland's fjords and glaciers. Sami Lalou, the new actor in Turku City Theatre, will play Jakob. Other roles will be played by Linda Hämäläinen, Stefan Karlsson, Mika Kujala, Tom Petäjä, Ulla Reinikainen, Kirsi Tarvainen and Linda Wiklund.
Tickets for the autumn 2024 performances are on sale in Turku City Theatre's channels and Lippupiste. Hotel packages are also available for those traveling to Turku. Performances will continue in the spring of 2025.
