Dancing on the roofs, art tours in the woods and festivals in the neighborhoods?
Tampere Region is applying for European Capital of Culture title for the year 2026 when one of the two nominated cities will be from Finland. The European Capitals of Culture (ECOC) initiative is among the most widely known actions of the European Union.
Tampere Region’s Capital of Culture bid has launched an open call for programme proposals. Tampere seeks proposals especially for the year 2026 but also for preceding years. Open call will end on the 15th of October, 11.59 p.m. (Finnish time, UTC+3).
During the autumn, the programme groups formed for the Capital of Culture bid will consider the proposals together with the bidding team. Everybody who has submitted a proposal will be contacted by the end of November 2019. About the usage and the publication of the proposal the submitter in question will be contacted later.
The best proposals will be selected as part of the programme plan of Tampere Region’s Capital of Culture bid. The bid-book, which will be submitted to the Board in 5 May 2020, presents a programme plan for 2026 and the years preceding it and describes the potentially carried out programme proposals.
If Tampere and Tampere Region are selected in 2021 as a European Capital of Culture 2026, the proposals can be carried out. Most of the programme takes place between 2023 and 2026 and culminates in the Capital of Culture year 2026.
The online form for proposal and all the relevant information about the Open Call can be found in https://tampereregion2026.fi/en/opencall/
The overarching theme of Tampere Region’s Capital of Culture bid is Capital of Equality. Tampere wants to promote equality in all of its various forms. Tampere wants to become the international forerunner and advocate of all forms of equality. Tampere wants to be an example to whole Europe.
The history of Tampere and Tampere Region is full of edge and so is the present city. That is why More Edge was chosen to be one of the four sub-themes of this bid. More Village Hopping tells how we want to move between municipalities sustainably while deepening our knowledge of the surrounding area. How could strengthening the local identity be linked to being a modern European citizen? More Sauna reminds us of a sauna bench where people sit on side by side, as equals stripped of all titles. That is an image of the people of the Tampere Region. More Play tells us simply that Everybody has the right to play and have fun.
The slogan of this bid is Tampere2026 - Let’s Make a Song and Dance About It! The slogan is turning one traditional slogan of Tampere upside down. The common impression of Tampere people is that they tend to underestimate their own achievements by saying: Do not make a song and dance about it!
