The General Assembly of the National Union of University Student in Finland (SYL) will be held at Hotel Korpilampi, Espoo, on 29–30 November. SYL is the common representative of all the 135,000 students in Finnish universities. The General Assembly elects the new President and the six memebers of the Executive Board, and outlines the union's objectives and operations for the forthcoming year.
The General Assembly commences Friday at 10:00. The meeting resumes at 9:30 Saturday morning, after which Minister of Education Krista Kiuru addresses the attendants of the SYL General Assembly at 11:00. On Saturday afternoon, around 16–17 o'clock, the meeting culminates in the election of SYL’s new President and Executive Board.
The General Assembly is the highest decision-making body of SYL, with representatives from all 15 university student unions in Finland. The student unions nominate a total of 144 delegates for the General Assembly. The total number of people attending the meeting is circa 300.
Three candidates are running for President of SYL. The candidates are: Mari Kröger from the Student Union of the University of Jyväskylä (JYY), Piia Kuosmanen from the Aalto University Student Union (AYY) and Joel Kuuva from the Student Union of Lappeenranta University of Technology (LTKY).
The number of candidates for the six-member SYL Executive Board is currently eight*. The following candidates have been nominated for the SYL Executive Board by the student unions: Jari Järvenpää (Student Union of the University of Tampere Tamy), Annika Kempe (University of the Arts Student Union TaiYo), Hilkka Kemppi (Student Union of the University of Lapland LYY), Antti Kähkönen (Student Union of Hanken School of Economics SHS), Petra Peltonen (Student Union of the University of Turku TYY), Marko Rosenholm (Student Union of the University of Helsinki HYY), and Teppo Suominen (Student Union of the University of Jyväskylä JYY). In addition to candidates nominated by the student unions, the Student Union of the National Coalition Party has nominated HYY board member Pirre Seppänen for the SYL Executive Board.
The statutory items on the agenda for the meeting include next year’s plan of action and budget. Other items on the agenda include discussion around SYL's basic income policy and the goals of the student movement for next year's European Parliament Election and for the 2015 Finnish Parliamentary Election.
The media is very welcome to follow the yearly high point of Finnish student politics on both days of the meeting. The election of officials will take place on Saturday afternoon. SYL will inform the media about the results as soon as possible once the results are in. The preferred times for interviews are during lunch (Fri 12–13 and Sat 13–14) and after the conclusion of the assembly.
