What are the social security implications of working in another EU country? Does someone residing in Finland for a short period of time become eligible for social security benefits in Finland? Answers to these questions and more can be found on Kela’s new webpage on international social security.
An updated section on international social security is now available in Finnish, Swedish and English on Kela’s website at kela.fi. The section was updated to make it more useful to customers. Previously titled Moving to and from Finland, the section is now found under the heading International situations.
“International social security is not always solely about moving to or from a country. By renaming the section, we want to direct our customers to relevant information,” says Olga Tarsalainen, who was in charge of the update.
The sections for students, pensioners and families with children, among others, were updated earlier this year. The section on international situations is the 8th major addition made to kela.fi since the concept for the website was redefined.
Quick guides provide a clear overview of social security
International social security can be complicated. People are increasingly moving for work, and may sometimes receive social security benefits from several EU or EEA countries at a time.
The updated section now features two quick guides that provide a quick overview of the issues involved. For example, they offer advice to someone who is about to move abroad for work or study reasons.

Information on specific benefits
If a person is planning to move abroad, they may be unsure whether they will continue to get family benefit or sickness allowance payments after moving. The updated pages now include information about specific social security benefits in international situations. There is a new section titled Benefits in international situations with useful information and tips.
