The Finnish airline Blue1 will begin flying between Lappeenranta and Copenhagen four times a week on 1 June, 2012. The City of Lappeenranta and Blue1 signed a marketing cooperation agreement on 28 March 2012.
Thanks to numerous flight connections available in Copenhagen, the new route will hugely increase the flight options to and from Lappeenranta.
In addition to the City of Lappeenranta, three hotels, Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) and Lappeenranta City Holding Company Ltd are participating in the marketing partnership. The participant hotels are the hotel Lappee, owned by Etelä-Karjalan Osuuskauppa; Holiday Club Resorts Oy; and Restel Oy, owned by Tradeka.
The Deputy Mayor of the City of Lappeenranta, Kari Korkiakoski, is delighted that the hotels and university, which benefit from the development of tourism in the region, are also sharing the costs.
– The Copenhagen route will bring Lappeenranta closer to Europe's most prosperous regions, Denmark and southern Sweden, and open up a variety of new destinations thanks to good flight connections. I believe that we will receive more support from local businesses in the future, as experiences so far suggest that flight connections are clearly beneficial to the future of both Lappeenranta and the whole of southeastern Finland, Korkiakoski predicts.
When the Copenhagen route opens, Lappeenranta will be served by three operating airlines: airBaltic is already operating between Riga and Lappeenranta, and Ryanair between Lappeenranta and Milan, as well as Lappeenranta and Düsseldorf. Ryanair will cease operating between Lappeenranta and Brussels from 17 April.
