Callio FutureMINE project, financed by the Regional Innovations and Experimentations (AIKO) programme of Council of Oulu Region, shows that the next generation mining equipment and future technologies can be tested in Pyhäsalmi mine after the mine closure in late 2019.
Gaia Consulting Ltd reports several potential opportunities. For example, an underground mining & tunneling equipment, battery operated equioment and biomining techniques are worth to be tested in real-life operating environment. Furthermore, autonomous or remotely controlled loaders and trucks are potential future technologies for this kind of testing environment. The study highlights the importance of an underground 4G/5G connectivity and wireless IoT -technologies where one can create intelligent, dynamic communications to improve the safety, productivity, efficiency and responsiveness of underground operations.
Callio Pyhäjärvi offers a safe, stable and versatile operating environment, even when measured against the most stringent global indicators, that also allows a diverse range of R&D and testing operations as well as extensive experiments. New opportunities can be leveraged by international actors as well as domestic technology suppliers, many of them global leaders in their field.
” From the very beginning till today Pyhäsalmi Mine has developed in co-operation with domestic technology suppliers many advanced technologies both for surface and for underground operations. We look forward to extend that work beyond mine-life and to see our unique underground infrastructure utilized. ” Kimmo Luukkonen, Managing Director, Pyhäsalmi Mine Oy.
Most recently, Normet carried out an extensive functionality and durability testing program for their next generation underground vehicle. Aim here was to assess and validate design targets and the state of the art customer experience earlier in the product development cycle.
” It has been very interesting to take a look of FutureMINE concept to find out of its opportunities. Our research points out that there is an actual need for testing environment that Callio can offer. An opportunity to test mining technologies in their real environment gives new possibilities to various technology suppliers. Benefit of FutureMINE is versatile and modern environment. ” Antti Pitkämäki, Gaia Consulting Oy.
Sakari Nokela, Program Director of the Callio Pyhäjärvi: " There is huge potential in the FutureMINE testing environment. The demand for an underground technology testing environment is high while the global supply is today very low. "
