In Finland, Lapland Hotels SnowVillage has opened an icy experience for its visitors for the 19th time in the Lainio area. SnowVillage is a differentand breathtaking ensemble of snow and ice art that includes, among other things, decorated snow suites, an ice restaurant and an ice bar. The original snow hotel was built exactly 20 years ago on the shores of Lake Ylläsjärvi, but the people of SnowVillage will celebrate their anniversary next year as it is the 20th year in the Lainio area.
This winter season, the SnowVillage team was inspired to create the view through a magnifying glass.
“The theme is Macro World, which downsizes visitors to make them feel small with all the objects around them huge at the same time. The sculptures visualize both everyday spaces and environments not normally reached by the human gaze,” says Janne Pasma, Production Manager at SnowVillage.
Due to the warm early winter, the SnowVillage was not opened as normal until Christmas week – leaving the construction team five weeks to create the whole ice world.
“We are working with the construction team in a bubble so that international sculptors have also been able to get involved if they have a negative COVID-19 test result. We have essentially the same employees building every winter season, which allows this whole project to emerge in record time. So, a big thanks to the professional team,” Pasma continues.
The SnowVillage carefully follows the safety instructions related to COVID-19, which have also been invested in. The passage through the village flows in only one direction, so it is possible to maintain safe distances between different groups. However, the attractions have not been compromised and, for example, children still have access to the ice slide. The ice restaurant and bar also serve as usual. In addition, mechanical ventilation has been built into the SnowVillage to recirculate and purify the breathing air efficiently.
Lapland Hotels has long invested in the development of its restaurants and in producing wonderful restaurant experiences and taste experiences while respecting the roots of the north. This winter season, Lapland Hotels SnowVillage is also piloting a new concept by Sirly Ylläsjärvi, known from the MasterChef competition, inspired by Miele in the ice restaurant.
“Every winter, we strive to create something new in our concept. This year, we are building the world’s first working Chef’s Table in an ice restaurant. Before the start of the project, together with Miele, we thought about how we could, in practice, enable the integration of a kitchen in the ice. We decided to combine our expertise to achieve the project – the people at Miele know their equipment and we have knowledge of ice,” says Technical Director Tomi Kurtakko.
The idea of Chef’s Table is to offer diners a special restaurant experience, where the chef creates dinner at the same table. Lapland Hotels SnowVillage's Chef's Table can be booked in the spring, for example, for your own party.
