EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art will celebrate the centenary of the birth of a pioneer of Finnish abstract art, Ernst Mether-Borgström (1917-1996), by showcasing his work at the Finlandia Trophy Espoo international figure skating competition.
Ernst Mether-Borgström (1917–1996) ranks among the leading proponents of Finnish modernism. A graphic artist, painter and sculptor, Mether-Borgström was a constant seeker of the new during a career spanning from the mid-1930s to the early 1990s. His primary vehicle of expression was colour, which he used both with subtle sophisitication and bold exuberance.
A selection of Mether-Borgström’s sculptures from EMMA’s collections will be on display in the Finlandia Trophy Kiss & Cry green room where the contestants wait for their scores. EMMA is currently hosting a comprehensive retrospective of Ernst Mether-Borgström’s entire career to mark the centenary of his birth. Also coinciding with the centenary of Finland’s indepedence, the exhibition is an eye-opening added chapter to the story of Finnish modernism.
The loan of the sculptures marks the continuation of collaboration between EMMA and the Finnish Figure Skating Association that began in 2016, when Rut Bryk’s art was featured at the Finlandia Trophy event.
An exciting line-up of world-class skating stars wil be competing in this year’s Finlandia Trophy, including women’s figure skating World Champions Carolina Kostner and Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, two-time World Champions in ice dance Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron from France, men’s World Bronze medalist Boyang Jin from China and Russian Olympic silver medalistsin pair skating Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov. The Finlandia Trophy Espoo forms part of the ISU Challenger Series.
