LUT was ranked among the top 101-200 out of 766 universities in the 2020 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Ranking. LUT's ascent was steep this year – in the previous ranking, LUT was in the top 301-467. LUT also improved its position among Finnish universities: it rose from fifth to third and was the only university in Finland to improve its ranking from the previous year.
LUT University's position in the THE Impact Ranking has improved. THE is one of the world's most highly regarded university rankings.
The THE Impact Ranking assesses the social and economic impact of universities against the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The 17 SDGs aim to promote human and environmental well-being and economic prosperity.
LUT has promoted Responsible Consumption and Production especially successfully. According to the ranking, LUT is the sixth best in this area.
"We are conducting more and more research in this area. We have also increased our waste recycling and reduced our carbon dioxide emissions," says Jari Hämäläinen, LUT's Vice Rector, Research.
In addition to responsible consumption, LUT's Trailblazer 2030 strategy and research primarily support the following SDGs: Clean Water and Sanitation, Affordable and Clean Energy, Climate Action, Partnership for the Goals, and Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.
The Impact Ranking assessed LUT in these areas, and LUT's scores clearly exceeded the median level. LUT also obtained top scores in water and clean energy research, spinoff companies, sustainable development education and sustainability reporting.
"Renewable energy, clean water and air, the circular economy, and sustainable business were also the cornerstones of our previous strategy. We have consistently promoted sustainable development goals for a long time. Our work can now be seen in our ranking scores," Hämäläinen states.
Earlier this April, LUT's Junior University was awarded by the International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN) as the best collaboration model for promoting sustainable development. In February, LUT was the second Finnish university to sign the SDG Accord.
LUT aims to stop climate change instead of adapting to it. LUT aspires for carbon negativity by 2024.
