The Agri-INNO Award, a EUR 5,000 prize funded by the Finnish Fair Foundation and presented at the Agricultural Machinery Trade Fair, has been awarded to GrainSense. GrainSense, a Finnish agritech start-up, has developed the world’s first truly hand-held device for grain protein measurement. GrainSense’s lead inventor and founder is German-born Ralf Marbach.
For the first time, farmers, seed producers, and plant breeders will be able to rapidly measure the key parameters of their crops in the field and make decisions that can significantly improve their productivity and profitability. GrainSense enables a major improvement to food supply chain. The GrainSense hand-held device measures the protein, moisture, oil and carbohydrate content of cereals and other crops. The service utilizes GPS positioning and offers cloud based big data services.
“Journey so far has been very interesting and content rich but as well challenging. I would like to thank the whole GrainSense team for achievements so far and all co-operation partners and investors for received support”, says Edvard Krogius, CEO of GrainSense. “The whole GrainSense team of twenty professionals is very grateful and happy to receive this valuable price and acknowledgment, which comes timely very well during our preparations for next years efforts”, Edvard Krogius continues.
The Agri-INNO Award will be presented every other year to a Finnish person, team, community or company that has developed an innovation that supports the agricultural sector. The award will be given for an innovation that bestows a positive image on the sector and can be developed into an internationally significant product or service.
Co-operation partners
Following co-operation partners have contributed in the development of the GrainSense measurement device and business:
Affordable by individual farmers
GrainSense has after more than two year of development phase, launched the product in summer 2018, and has now sold hundreds of grain quality measurement devices, mainly on the Swedish, Finnish and Baltic markets. Viljelijän Berner sales and markets the GrainSense device in the Nordics.
“Wherever the GrainSense device and solution has been introduced, we have seen exceptionally strong interest in the device”, says Edvard Krogius. “The feedback from customers is overwhelming and we have been very busy attending events, field days, and conferences in Northern Europe presenting the device through out the whole year. We have received a lot of interest from international markets where we currently expand our distribution network”, Krogius continues.
GrainSense is the first grain quality measurement device that is affordable and field durable to be owned and used by farmers. The international end-user sales price is 3.900 eur (tax 0%), including the device, a carry bag, a measure cup, cap and 1 year warranty. A personal user account is needed for the use of the device; 250 eur/year (tax 0%), includes country specific species (currently available are wheat, barley, oats, rye, and rapeseed), updates and calibrations, data storage, and the possibility to share the measurement results.
Big interest among the farming community
The GrainSense solution has been developed in close collaboration with individual farmers and farming organizations. The feedback from farmers has confirmed that currently there are no suitable tools available to support farm-level decision-making in order to manage and optimize the protein content of crops.
Bringing the grain quality measurement practice to the farm level
The GrainSense hand-held device measures the protein, moisture, oil, and carbohydrate content of cereals and other crops – i.e. key determinants of the harvest value and processing cost. The device is battery powered, the measurement time is just a few seconds, and it requires only a few grains and takes just seconds to make each measurement. The service includes a mobile application with GPS positioning and cloud connection, which supports a suite of value-added services for improving productivity and profitability.
Laboratory accuracy from field in seconds
For the first time, farmers, seed producers, and plant breeders will be able to rapidly measure the key parameters of their crops in the field (even before harvesting) and make decisions that can significantly improve their productivity and profitability. The device will also enable meat producers to control and adjust the protein content of feed in real time, which can have a major impact on profitability.
