Elisa Corporation, press release, 27 May 2019
Elisa supports the World Summit of Students for Climate by providing special network connections for the event in Liperi and by streaming the declaration ceremony live at Elisa’s YouTube and Facebook on 5 June starting 9 a.m. from the Banquet Hall of the Helsinki City Hall.
The World Summit of Students for Climate will bring over 250 students from all continents and approximately 100 countries to Finland on 29 May to 5 June. The summit was initiated by ENO Schoolnet and it provides students from 14 to 17 years of age a forum where they can express their concerns about climate change and suggest solutions to prevent it.
“For several days, we will have workshops in North Karelia, Liperi and Koli, and a good and stable internet connection is important for the participants. The main goal of the summit is to give voice to young people about climate issues, and to initiate a long-term school campaign with an objective for planting trees tying 3 million tons of carbon dioxide by 2025,” says Mika Vanhanen, the CEO of ENO Schoolnet.
Sponsoring the event is a way for Elisa to show support for the young people in the world, who will gather to take action to prevent climate change. Elisa is committed to the objective of being carbon-neutral and is the first Finnish teleoperator to take part in the international Science Based Targets Initiative, which companies can use to demonstrate their commitment to the objective of the Paris Agreement on climate change.
“We actively improve our operations both in Finland and Estonia to reduce our carbon footprint. Supporting the World Summit of Students for Climate by arranging the special network connection and live stream is also work for the climate. We help reduce emissions globally with the carbon sink from planted trees and most of all, by supporting schools taking climate measures and environmental education,” says Minna Kröger, corporate responsibility director at Elisa.
The World Summit of Students for Climate is organised by ENO Schoolnet and City of Helsinki with the support of Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Ministry of the Environment, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and National Board of Education, among others. The summit is endorsed by the president of the Republic of Finland, Mr Sauli Niinistö. The summit takes place during the European Sustainable Development Week and Helsinki is also hosting the World Circular Economy Forum at the same time.
