The online edition of Helsingin Uutiset (‘Helsinki News’), run by Media Group Keskisuomalainen, is piloting the NayaDaya™ technology, enabling readers to express their emotional responses to news and see each other’s reactions.
In recent years, interaction and communications via digital media have undergone dramatic changes. “Online discussions have become increasingly heated over the past three years, particularly those surrounding events that arouse strong feelings. Strongly polarized debate deters some readers from participating and gives a biased view of public opinion,” explained Silja Tenhunen, the content director at Etelä-Suomen Media, which is part of the Keskisuomalainen group.
Keskisuomalainen has launched a pilot project to implement new technology that enables readers to express – anonymously and constructively – the emotions aroused by news published in the online edition of Helsinki News. The NayaDaya™ application was implemented for the newspaper on Tuesday, October 24. Alongside news items, the digital tool for expressing emotions will be distributed also to other newspapers owned by Etelä-Suomen Media.
“It will be interesting to see how our readers welcome the opportunity to report their reactions to the articles. Analysis of such emotion-related data will tell us which articles and topics arouse the strongest feelings. By tapping into the full range of human emotions, we can shed light on issues that haven’t been studied before,” said Tenhunen.
