Metal coin manufacturer Mint of Finland will release the Presidents of Finland collector coin series by decision of the Ministry of Finance. The first collector coin in the series will pay tribute to K.J. Ståhlberg, the first President of Finland. The coin will be released on 3 May. The nominal value of a collector coin is five euros.
Base-metal collector coins will be minted for the Presidents of Finland in 2016–2017. A total of eight collector coins paying tribute to the presidents of Finland are planned for release in the series, with the coins of K.J. Ståhlberg, L.K. Relander, P.E. Svinhufvud and Kyösti Kallio to be launched in 2016. The coins of Risto Ryti, C.G.E. Mannerheim, J.K. Paasikivi and U.K. Kekkonen are planned for release in 2017.
The Decree of the Ministry of Finance on the Presidents of Finland collector coins to be released in 2016 is available here.
The collector coins of the Presidents of Finland series will feature in the Finland 100 programme celebrating the centennial of Finland's independence.
Finland will celebrate the centennial of its independence in 2017. Communications Director Henna Karjalainen of Mint of Finland feels honoured to be involved in the celebrations. “For our part, we will launch the anniversary celebrations with the Presidents of Finland series. We expect that the dignified theme will make the series popular among collectors,” Henna Karjalainen says.
The maximum mintages of the base-metal collector coin with a nominal value of EUR 5 will be 30,000 UNC-quality coins and 6,000 proof-quality coins. Collector coins have a diameter of 27.25 millimetres and weigh 9.8 grammes. The collector coins are designed by Tero Lounas.
Proof-quality, finished collector coins are offered in a protective transparent casing set in a cardboard package specially designed for the series. The price of a proof-quality collector coin is EUR 22.
UNC-quality collector coins will be sold in paper coin envelopes for EUR 10 each. The UNC-quality coins will also be offered in a cardboard box with a new look for EUR 62.
The K.J. Ståhlberg collector coin will be available to advance order from the Mint of Finland online shop from Tuesday 19 April. The collector coin will be available from the online shop and Mint of Finland's retailers from the release date of 3 May. The following coin scheduled for release in the series will pay tribute to President L.K. Relander.
Mint of Finland will mint the coins by virtue of a Decree of the Ministry of Finance. The coins will be minted at Mint of Finland's factory in Vantaa. Proof-quality Presidents of Finland collector coins have been granted the Key Flag Label of the Association for Finnish Work.
