Ote / Points of View at EMMA Museum
Presenting one painting and a myriad of ways in which to encounter it
19.12.2015–31.1.2016
Opening on 18.12.2015 from 17–19
Foxtrot, tango, waltz or humppa? Not the usual question one would ask a companion in a gallery! Traditional lavatanssit dancing is one of many gestures that will encircle Tyko Sallinen’s painting Piruntanssi (1919) this winter at Espoo Museum of Modern Art (EMMA).
EMMA’s Areena space hosts Ote / Points of View, an exhibition curated by Aalto University students, that challenges normative ways of interacting with an artwork, giving audiences permission to dance, dine, listen and look at length in a space usually restricted to silence, walk-by glances and swift steps. Ote breaks the rules and invites the public to try out many ways to spend time with an artwork in a museum space.
Public events are an important part of the exhibition, and many take place on free entry Friday evenings. Programming includes a workshop interpreting elements of the Kilonpuisto primary school curriculum, the aforementioned contemporary “lavatanssit” (dancing in pairs) evening, a dinner designed with Restaurant Hukkatila by Jaakko Blomberg and Jyrki Tsutsunen, as well as lectures that offer a different perspective on Sallinen’s work and life.
His seminal painting Piruntanssi is the sole work presented in Ote. The exhibition is providing a new way to look at the Saastamoinen Foundation Collection. Exhibitions of such large collections usually tend to overwhelm with the sheer amount of artworks competing for attention, so this choice produces instead a space for reflection and contemplation.
In addition to this space of focus, Ote rethinks the standardised setting for modernist painting. By drawing attention to the architectural possibilities of a museum’s ’white cube’, elements of the classical exhibition hall are erased, emphasised or re-worked through the lens of light and sound interventions by Helsinki-based artists Can Uzer and Ina Saarinen.
The exhibition is curated and produced by a team of Aalto University’s School of Arts, Design and Architecture students (Dahlia El Broul, Eva Forsman, Kinga Hamvai, Ksenia Kaverina, Mari Kemppinen, Katie Lenanton, Piia Oksanen, Diogo Santos, Nina Suni, Annukka Vähäsöyrinki and Darja Zaitsev), in collaboration with EMMA museum and the Saastamoinen Foundation Collection. The process was facilitated by Henna Harri from Aalto University as well as by Emilia Laine and Henna Paunu from EMMA.
