The president of Finland, mr Sauli Niinistö, took part in a Code School for children today in Helsinki. Mr Niinistö also joined the children in trying out coding. He is one of the first presidents in the world to code.

Code School is an event where 4-9 year old children have a chance to try out computer programming together with their parents. The kids use a graphic coding tool to draw simple images.

This morning, Code School had a very special guest: the president of Finland, Sauli Niinistö, joined the class. The president entered mid-lesson and took a moment to chat with his fellow coding students. He was interested in knowing their coding history and future plans in programming and the kids were eager to show the president what they’d created.

After collecting some valuable tips from the participants of Code School, the president sat down to try programming himself. Mr Niinistö was familiarized with the Turtle Roy graphical programming tool and was taught to move the cursor around with simple commands. The application visualises the code, and mr Niinistö learned to draw circles using real code.

– I’m used to applying logical reasoning to tasks of my profession. Programming reminds me of that, commented the president.

Programming will be included in the 2016 national core curriculum for basic education in Finland.

The story behind Code School

The Code School project started out as a small coding club for the offspring of Finnish creative technology company Reaktor’s employees in the Fall of 2013. The lessons were so well liked among little coders that we wanted to give every child a chance to get to know the basics of programming. No experience in coding is required.

The first public coding lesson was immensely popular. The registration filled up within an hour, and over 300 children were placed on a waiting list. Other great Finnish companies have also recognized the demand for code clubs and joined the movement: Futurice, Solita, Eficode, Codento, Vincit, Vaadin and many other it companies have also hosted programming lessons.

All in all, dozens of Code Schools have been arranged since 2014 and hundreds of coders have taken their first steps in the world of programming. See a video of one of our Code Schools here: https://vimeo.com/151616274
