The world-wide gymnastics festival World Gymnaestrada will take place for the first time in Finland and will gather gymnasts from five continents to Finnish capital Helsinki. Held in July, the World Gymnaestrada will be the biggest event ever organised in Finland in terms of international participants. The President of the Republic of Finland Sauli Niinistö and the First Lady Jenni Haukio act as the patrons of the World Gymnaestrada 2015 Helsinki.
The World Gymnaestrada, authorised by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), will be held this year for the first time in Finland from July 12th until July 18th. The gymnastics festival, which is organised every four years, will gather 21,000 participants from over 50 different countries to Helsinki.
- ”We are glad that during the World Gymnaestrada, Helsinki will turn into one big gymnastics arena, where gymnasts from different countries will showcase their cultures and gymnastics traditions. The event is a celebration of international friendship, experiencing and sharing things together and the joy of gymnastics. The event has noble aspirations. With sense of solidarity, civic activity and physical exercise, we can improve the well-being of everyone”, says the patron of the event, President of Finland Sauli Niinistö in the greeting he gave to the participants.
Organising the World Gymnaestrada in Finland has been a long-term dream for the Finnish Gymnastics Federation. The event that will be held for the 15th time this upcoming summer will bring together a record amount of Finnish participants: 4,000 gymnasts from over 140 gymnastics clubs. The event will be organised mainly with the help of volunteers and cooperation parters. In addition, almost 4000 volunteers will be needed during the festival week. Along with Finnish volunteers, there have been registrations from 25 other countries.
The Finns are regular attenders in the World Gymnaestrada that has been organised since 1953, but Finland will be the host country for the first time. The aim of the Finnish Gymnastics Federation is to leave a legacy for future event organisers and governing bodies, also in Finland. This will be done following a new kind of model of civic activism and event arrangement.
