A series of short documentary videos, called "Live&Learn - Stories of adult learning", focusing on adult learning stories has been published online. The eight videos, from Finland, Denmark, UK and Portugal, feature both adult learners and educators and are meant to increase understanding of learning benefits and good pedagogic practice. The series can be seen as a part of an increasing narrative and visual trend in communication and learning advocacy. The videos are in the public domain, free to be used and distributed by any interested party.
Lee grew up in a Northern English community, in a family of miners, hard hit by the recession of the 80s. With precious little opportunity to fuel any ambition beyond mining or construction, Lee drifted, and got into drugs. Lee's manager recognised his potential and suggested getting back to learning. This was a decisive moment in his life. Watch!
Hailing from a family of teachers, Sigrid vowed never to become one herself. Which of course she did. She educates youngsters at Krogerup Folk High School. Her subject: how to change the world! Sigrid teaches active citizenship through a variety of methods including trade simulations and actual campaigning. Watch!
A new visual approach to learning advocacy
Lee and Sigrid are among the eight protagonists featured in a video documentary series on adult learning, unveiled online last week. The production is the first multinational documentary series on adult learning using protagonist-centered narrative and artistic means. The production of the videos can be seen as part of a larger trend of using audiovisual and narrative content in communication and advocacy work.
Other stories featured include Veli-Antti, a Finnish music educator building a learning team out of an amateur symphony orchestra, and Portuguese Idalina fulfilling her ambition to become a solicitor after three decades working in textile factories.
The documentaries are produced in Denmark, Finland, the UK and Portugal. Each country features two videos, one of a learner, one of an educator. This reflects the two main target groups for the videos: The learner stories are intended to be testimonies of the power and benefits of both vocational and nonformal learning, aimed at the general public and education advocates. The educator stories are more geared towards sharing good practices among adult educators.
A free resource for all
The documentaries were funded by the EU, produced within the Erasmus + framework and coordinated by the Finnish Lifelong Learning Foundation. They are a free resource for journalists, learning advocates, and educators and are free for anyone to use, screen or disseminate. The videos are available on the video sharing site Vimeo and on the European Lifelong Learning Magazine Elm.
