Spencer Tunick: Finland 9, 2002.
In the exhibition produced by VB Photography Centre will be the first exhibit participant prints from installations all around the world. The impression of even surfaces of human bodies is emphasized next to larger exhibition prints revealing the detailed side of the artworks. The participants' installation experience is also highlighted on video. This exhibition also includes the installations that took place in Helsinki in 2002.
New York based photographic artist Spencer Tunick has documented the live nude figure in public, with photography and video, for over 30 years. Since 1994, he has organized over 100 temporary site-related installations that encompass dozens, hundreds or thousands of volunteers. With his works Spencer Tunick wants to encourage us to appreciate the human body and view it as a form of art, just like a painting or a sculpture. When another artist might paint a scenery with oil paints or sculpt their idea out of clay, Tunick uses bare skin and its countless different tones to create a sort of an abstraction and a new form. These photographs created out of human masses do not emphasize sexuality, but challenges our view of nudity and public space.
The backdrops for Tunick’s scenes can be selected from anything from a desert sandstorm to the centre of New York. Nudity can be seen differently as the backdrop changes and has a different meaning to it. Although nudity can be seen as a common practice in art, Tunicks work’s challenges the typical genre creating a solid foundation in contemporary art. In his installations Tunick combines the human mass and carefully places them into the scenery, creating a sculptural and a picturesque scene. For some installations, he adds objects that the participants are often holding or wearing and has included body paint. Often the works entail a deeper meaning to them, such as awareness of cancer, HIV/AIDS, LGBTQ rights, equality and climate change, among other issues.
These installations have connected hundreds of thousands of participants around the world. Spencer could not make his art without the generosity of the participants. He is eternally grateful for their participation. All the participants have received a limited edition print of the installation as a memento, the same size prints as exhibited in the exhibition at the VB Photography Centre.
The exhibition will lead to the newest installation by Spencer Tunick, that will be organised on the 15th of July in Kuopio. The print of this installation will be published during the exhibition. More information of installation and sign up to participate: www.kuopiotunick.com
