Lahti has a long history as a city of design. For several decades now, the local business sector has integrated design into the furniture and clothing industry. Isku and L-Fashion Group are among the local companies whose brands have stood the test of time. Lahti-based companies utilise design expertise in the manufacture of many industrial products, such as Kemppi’s welding machines, Oilon’s industrial and process burners, and ALLU’s screening and processing buckets.
Lahti encompasses user-centred design, also in services. Lahti City is unique in terms of the extent of involvement of local residents in city planning. Residents have the opportunity to participate in the development of the local living environment, products and services. Such projects have included the Pisara drinking fountain in Laune Family Park, the bicycle parking facility at Lahti Railway Station, and the multipurpose municipal buildings in Jalkaranta and Liipola residential areas.
Another important factor in Lahti’s standing as a notable design city is the Institute of Design at Lahti University of Applied Sciences. It’s a renowned educational institute, both nationally and internationally, and it has produced several famous industrial designers.

Lahti is a city of 120,000 residents and a centre for a region of 200,000 people. It has the best of both worlds: the attractiveness, intimate cosiness and originality of a small town, yet the services, efficiency and logistics of a major city.
