Savonlinna Opera Festival 2022 will take place from 1 to 31 July. After two years of silence, the desire for opera is stronger than ever, so we’ve put together a particularly delectable repertoire. The summer premiere of Aida will be directed by Philipp Himmelmann, famed for his timelessly elegant productions. Adina Aaron and Helena Juntunen will sing the role of Aida. Tosca’s cast is no less impressive. Besides Ludovic Tézier, reputably the world’s best tenor, Savonlinna proudly presents Matthew Polenzani and Miina-Liisa Värelä, who is rapidly rising to international stardom. Carmen, meanwhile, never loses its popular appeal.
Our visiting opera company is the Croatian National Theatre from Rijeka. Their Giulio Cesare in Egitto is a gripping interpretation of Handel’s rarely seen baroque opera. An evening of two Italian one-act operas combines Ferruccio Busoni’s playful take on history, Arlecchino, with Giacomo Puccini’s comedy Gianni Schicchi. Both share the same protagonist, making them an apt double bill. Arlecchino has never been performed in Finland before.
On 24 July, The Savonlinna Opera Festival Choir will treat audiences to a jubilee concert conducted by Matti Hyökki. Hyökki’s lengthy tenure as the festival’s choral master has come to an end, and this summer he will be succeeded by Jan Schweiger. In addition to starring in Tosca, Ludovic Tézier will sing at a concert together with his wife, soprano Cassandre Berthon. Olavinlinna castle will also play host to concert by Wardruna, the Norwegian ambient group inspired by Norse mythology.
Due to the cancellations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, this summer will showcase the first full repertoire by Artistic Director Ville Matvejeff. Matvejeff started in his role in autumn 2019. To see the entire repertoire and performance schedule, visit our website at operafestival.fi.
