Onoma’s summer exhibition, Hidden – Forms of the Senses, explores multi-sensory experience through art, design and craft. The exhibition will open on 22 May 2022 at the Copper Smithy in Fiskars.
“In everything we do and experience, we engage with our senses. Consciously and unconsciously. When one of our important senses fades, breaks, is lost, or otherwise acts up, the other senses come to the rescue to remedy the whole. This is when we realise how multi-sensory experience works, and what a perfect whole it is in terms of our mental and physical functioning and balance. This perfect whole comes in a variety of forms. Its individuality and uniqueness are very fascinating.”
“The changes in our sensory experience brought about by rapid digitalisation, as well as our recent physical and mental isolation, have stirred in us the need to use our senses more holistically. We long for sensory experiences and the thoughts they evoke. I feel that the theme of the exhibition is especially relevant right now.” - Laura Sarvilinna, curator of the Hidden exhibition
Artists and creatives operate in a sensory world that is strongly determined by the materials they use. The artists featured in the Hidden exhibition reflect on the meanings and possibilities of the various senses in their own work. What about the interpreter of a work of art or the user of an object? A number of factors contribute to how someone experiences and senses a work or an object. Often, however, the interpreter is strongly led by the creator of the work or object.
HIDDEN is part of the Fiskars Village Art & Design Biennale, which will occupy Fiskars Village in the summer of 2022. The biennial will be co-produced by Luovi Productions, Onoma and Fiskars Village, in cooperation with the City of Raseborg and several other parties.
