The designer duo COMPANY invites everyone to enjoy Japanese culture to Japan´s Holy Day event at the Design Museum 11th of May. The work demonstrations by Japanese master craftsmen, who have been invited to Helsinki by COMPANYs designers Aamu Song and Johan Olin, will be the highlight of the day. Free admission to Design Museum’s exhibitions, workshops and events.
The Holy Day events of the Secret Universe exhibition express respect for the cultures and craft traditions of different countries. The series of Holy Days will begin on Saturday 11th of May, when Design Museum celebrates Japan and the crafts skills of Japanese master practitioners. Next Holy Days will be at June 12th: Finland´s Holy Day, August 15th: Russia´s Holy Day and September 22nd: Mexico´s Holy Day.

Panel discussion: the Japanese spirit
at 11:30 am
How is the spirit of a product created and what does spirituality mean in the context of Secret Universe exhibition? Panel discussion with designers Aamu Song and Johan Olin, curator Takahashi Shigemi of the Aomori Art Museum, exhibition´s curator Suvi Saloniemi and Nene Tsuboi, who designed the layout of the Secret Universe book. The event will be opened by the Director of Finnish institute in Japan Anna-Maria Wiljanen.
Work demonstrations by Japanese master craftsmen
The demonstrations will be held at 12:30−1:30 p.m., 2:30−3:30 p.m. and 4:30−5:30 p.m.
The high point of this Holy Day is a demonstration of making traditional Japanese Kokeshi dolls by master craftsmen. Visiting Design Museum will be Abo Muchihide and Hirage Teruyuki, masters of the Kokeshi wooden doll tradition, who will lathe-turn wooden dolls in the exhibition space.

Students of Helsinki´s Japanese School perform two songs
At 2.15pm−2.25pm
The Students from the Japanese School in Helsinki will perform two Japanese songs in the 2nd floor exhibition space. They will sing Sakura (Cherry blossoms) ja Sanpo (from the movie My Neighbor Totoro).
Workshop and installation of faces in the Secret Universe exhibition space
Mask workshop from 2 pm to 4 pm
In the Mask workshop, held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., museum visitors can participate in creating an installation. The first 60 participants will be able to draw their own faces on wooden masks that will be included in the work. After the exhibition, participants are free to collect their own pieces from the installation.
The workshop operates on a nonstop basis with participation when a seat becomes free. The Mask workshop is meant for everyone and no special skills are required.
An origami workshop in Design Museum’s Studio
Origami workshop guided by Design Museum’s workshop instructor. The workshop will be on a nonstop basis.
