Following a decision made by the Ministry of Finance, Mint of Finland will issue a collector coin in honour of Tove Jansson on 7 February. This is the second collector coin issued in celebration of Jansson – she was commemorated on her first collector coin in 2004. The only person, other than Jansson, to have had two collector coins minted in their honour is President Kekkonen.
Collector coins are an honour bestowed by the authorities to recognise notable Finnish persons and events.
‘It is wonderful that we have been able to mint two collector coins to honour internationally acclaimed Tove Jansson. Before this, only President Kekkonen was granted a similar honour in 1975 and 1981 – this says a great deal about the significance of Jansson to Finns,’ says Paul Gustafsson, the CEO of Mint of Finland.
Mint of Finland will officially issue the Tove Jansson collector coins by presenting a coin to Jansson's niece Sophia Jansson on 30 January.
Gift and collectors’ item
Friends of Tove Jansson will purchase coins for various reasons.
‘Collector coins are becoming more and more popular as gifts. We believe that the Jansson coins will be purchased as gifts in several countries. Collectors are also sure to be interested in the second collector coin minted in honour of Jansson,’ says Henna Karjalainen, Communications Director at Mint of Finland.
The Tove Jansson collector coins have a nominal value of EUR 10 and 20. The collector coin with a nominal value of EUR 10 will be sold in a gift box.
25,000 half-silver (500) Tove Jansson collector coins with a nominal value of EUR 10 will be minted. The collector coin has a diameter of 28.5 mm and it weighs 10 g. Just 5,000 sterling silver (925) Tove Jansson collector coins with a nominal value of EUR 20 will be minted. The collector coin’s diameter is 38.6 mm and it weighs 25.5 g. Both these coins are of mirror finish proof quality.
Mint of Finland will also mint a special issue of 100 numbered Tove Jansson coins with a nominal value of EUR 20. The special edition coins will be given anti-tarnish nSilver coating developed by the Finnish company Beneq.
The Tove Jansson collector coin will be issued on 7 February. It will be available on the Mint of Finland online shop and from distributors.
Numbered and special coated Tove Jansson collector coins can only be ordered from Mint of Finland by calling customer services on +358 9 89434343 from 7 February onwards on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
