EMMA is opening the first media art space in Finland equipped with new generation technology. The media space Huone displays media art from the Saastamoinen Foundation Art Collection. The first work to be shown is Parametronomicon created by Prink Twins in 2014. Huone will be open to the public from 29 March 2017.
The crystal clear image of the 4K laser projector in Huone is run from a media player which can play uncompressed 4K image. The immersive sound produced with 17 main speakers and two subwoofers gives the audience a full-body experience. Viewers can time their visit by checking the time left of the previous showing on the information display placed outside the space. The technical systems in Room are built in collaboration with Genelec, Bright Finland, Picturall and Vertics.
”Genelec has operated throughout its existence on the interface between science and art. We are heavily committed to R&D collaboration to create innovative technologies. The diverse performance environments in the audio-visual art domain are a natural testbed for this work. The new exhibition at EMMA using the immersive 3D multichannel sound system give new technical and artistic opportunities to artists, consumers and audio-visual professionals.” Janne Lankinen, Domestic sales manager, Genelec
EMMA’s technical staff and Vertics have developed an info display placed outside Huone, which shows in real time the information about the work being shown and the timing of the show. The application tailored for EMMA retrieves real time media data directly from the video server. The display shows information on the work, stills and the duration of the work.
No similar product is in use anywhere else and many operators in the field have shown interest in the new technology. Vertics and EMMA will continue the development of the product for a launch on domestic and international markets. It is unusual for a museum to be involved in the development of a technical innovation that will be later rolled out to the entire field of art.
“EMMA is a trendsetter among museums also when it comes to technology. The new media room gives artists a venue to present media art with the best technology currently available. EMMA is the first art operator in Finland to use sound and image quality of this level.” Sami Supply, EMMA’s production manager
Pink Twins’ work Parametronomicon will now be premiered with 4K technology.
“Pink Twins’ works discuss the limits of human perception. Our goal is to give full-blown experiences, challenging the human sensory perception and sense of space. The purpose is for the video and sound to take command of the performance space and the people in there, as far as possible.” Pink Twins
Pink Twins is an artist duo of two brothers, Juha (b. 1978) and Vesa Vehviläinen (b. 1974), whose works combine changing digital soundscapes with video. Their works have featured in exhibitions and festivals around the world and live performances are also part of their artistic practice. Parametronomicon is an abstract computer animation with subject matters that simultaneously appear organic and mechanical. The animations consists of changing elements controlled by programmed parameters. The combinations and layers of the elements create the tension of a controlled chaos.
The installation of the work at EMMA’s Huone gives audiences a multisensory spatial experience created by the immediate soundspace, immersing the viewer, and the perceived 3-dimensionality of the visuals. The work uses art, science and electronic music to create almost a hypnotic experience. Pink Twins has produced a number of editions of Parametronomicon for different performance contexts.
As part of the collection exhibition Touch, EMMA’s Huone shows media works from the Saastamoinen Foundation Art Collection. Media art is one of the key areas in Saastamoinen Foundation’s purchasing policy and the Foundation’s collection currently includes approximately 50 media works.

EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art is one of Finland’s central art museums. Located in Tapiola, Espoo, EMMA’s collection and exhibition programme profiles Finnish and international modernism, contemporary art as well as design. EMMA’s exhibition spaces – the largest in Finland – are situated in the architecturally impressive WeeGee building designed by Professor Aarno Ruusuvuori. The modern architecture adds to the experience-focused presentation of the changing exhibitions and permanent collections of EMMA, the Saastamoinen Foundation and Tapio Wirkkala Rut Bryk Foundation.
