The Balticconnector gas pipeline project is progressing on schedule thanks to the procurement of a compressor. On Monday 16 October, Baltic Connector signed an agreement with Thermodyn S.A.S, part of Baker Hughes, a GE company, on the delivery and installation of the compressor unit. The contract price is around 5 million euros and covers the devices of the compressor unit, i.e. an integrated compressor electric motor, a frequency converter, a power transformer, and an automation system. The compressor is used for regulating gas pressure according to the needs of each gas transfer.
"This is the project's first significant acquisition made through public procurement. The procurement of the compressor is important also for staying on schedule," says President and CEO of Baltic Connector Oy, Herkko Plit.
The compressor will be delivered to the worksite in Inkoo in March 2019 with a planned commissioning in autumn 2019. The capacity of the acquired compressor is 300,000 mN/h and its maximum working pressure is 80 bar. During peak performance the compressor needs around 6 MW electrical power.
"The procurement of the compressor is central for the project because the infrastructure and the other devices of the compressor station will be built around the compressor. The compressor procured is based on the latest High Speed technology, which is emission free in operation and allows for a wider operating range and lower operating costs," says Tom Främling, Project Director of Baltic Connector Oy.
Baltic Connector Oy is a state-owned company set up in 2015 to implement the Finnish part of the Balticconnector gas pipeline to be built between Finland and Estonia. When completed, Balticconnector will connect the gas networks of Finland and the Baltic countries and will enable the opening of the gas market in Finland. The EU has granted funding to cover 75% of the project, and the project is due to be completed by 2020.
