Woolsocks reflect the relaxed and uncomplicated attitude of life in Orivesi and the cozy atmosphere of a small town. The city of Orivesi declared as the Capital of Woolsocks in Finland officially on the 28th of January 2021.
- Covid-19 has changed our everyday life. We spend more time at home than before. Therefore, it’s even more important where your home is located and how you feel in it. Nature, peace and recreational possibilities close to home have become more important than before, says Juha Kuusisto, the Mayor of the city of Orivesi.
The City of Orivesi wants to offer opportunities to people who appreciate ease, but active lifestyle. The city offers comprehensive services to its residents and amazingly beautiful nature around. Orivesi also has a great location with only 24 minutes train ride from Tampere city center.
- It’s worthwhile to set up a home and business to a location where you feel comfortable. Woolsocks present the state of mind we want to reflect about Orivesi: easygoing, calm and fun, Kuusisto says.
The capital of woolsocks refers to the images, phenomena and facts associated with Orivesi. The woolsock tradition deep dives into history, but it also lives and flourishes even more strongly in Orivesi in the 2020s.
Every year, the Official Woolsock Run Finnish Championship is held in Orivesi. There are several different series in the competition. for both individual runners and teams. The event is a real goodwill happening for the whole family, and people around Finland come to participate in it. During the wintertime everyone has the possibility to go out and try the official Championship trails in the forests of Orivesi.
Orivesi has a lot of business related to handcrafts and natural materials, as well as a strong history of shoe making. Currently woolsocks can be considered as the basic footwear of a modern person remote working from home.
- The Capital of Woolsocks will be seen and heard more widely in Orivesi street scene and marketing, says Ulpu Aho, the woolsock coordinator of the city of Orivesi.
The goal is to extend the woolsock capital brand to all the city's activities, everyday life of our inhabitants, local businesses and community sector.
- Woolsocks are a hand knitted luxury product, a warm expression of love, and at the same time part of our residents' daily life. The declaration of the capital of woolsocks in Finland speaks of a relaxed attitude of life in Orivesi. - We are proud of our community and its uniqueness, says Ulpu Aho.
