Schoolchildren in Lahti get the chance to acquaint themselves with the cultural offerings of their home city during every school year. The culture programme offered as a part of basic education guarantees that the children, led by their teachers, get to experience the museums, theatres, concert halls and libraries of their city and to learn about design.
For many of the children, the cultural visit is the first of its kind and, best of all – they get to experience it with school children of the same age. The Lahti culture programme has been run continuously since 2009. Lahti was one of the first cities in Finland to offer systematic cultural education to schoolchildren. In the autumn of 2016, upper secondary schools were also handed their own operations model to support cultural education.
All schools in Lahti take part in cultural visits, a total of 10,000 of them during the academic year. Every school level has its own annual destination, which the children get to visit during a school day. The goal of the programme is to make children and youths familiar with their home city and to promote the equal availability of culture and the arts.
Children get the chance to compose
The Lahti Symphony Orchestra offers music education to children and youths. The children are introduced to classical music through composition projects and school concerts.
The Lahti Symphony Orchestra’s Hei me sävelletään (“Hey, we’re composing!”) projects have been run since 1995. Altogether 149 school and nursery groups and over 3,500 children have been given an introduction to composition. The project is implemented twice a year, and participation is free for schools.
During the project, the children get to compose a small piece with the musicians of the orchestra. The composition is created in workshops, and the children get to decide how the performance proceeds spurred by instructions and stimulus from the musicians. The theme of the composition is picked from the repertoire of the orchestra, and the composition is played at the final concert of the project at the Lahti Sibelius Hall. The most recent concert took place on 31 January 2017, with Le tombeau de Couperin by Ravel as the premiere. At the concert, the children performed their own composition to the audience and Lahti Symphony Orchestra performed the premiere.
The “Hei, me sävelletään!” project is based on the workshop methodology used by the London Sinfonietta, which Lahti Symphony Orchestra has tailored to suit its own purposes. The next, already the 46th, “Hei me sävelletään” project, takes place in the autumn.
Over 50 years of music education
The use of specific music classes in Finland started in Lahti in 1966. The music pedagogy was fashioned after the Hungarian model and developed into a form that fit the Finnish school system. Schoolchildren can seek music-based teaching from third class onward. In Lahti, approximately 60 children are chosen for music education per year. Neither previous experience nor your own instrument is required. The music-based teaching can be continued until upper secondary school.
In the music-based classrooms, the emphasis is on playing, singing and performing. There are 3–4 hours of music teaching per week, and the school offers band, choir and orchestra activities.

Lahtelaiset oppilaat saavat tutustua kotikaupunkinsa kulttuuriantiin jokaisella luokalla.
Kulttuuriohjelma on pyörinyt Lahdessa yhtäjaksoisesti vuodesta 2009. Lahti oli etujoukoissa luomassa koululaisille systemaattista kulttuurikasvatusta Suomessa. Syksyllä 2016 myös lukiot saivat oman toimintamallin kulttuurikasvatuksen tueksi.
Kaikki kaupungin koulut osallistuvat kulttuurikäynteihin, joten niitä kertyy lukuvuoden aikana yli 10 000. Jokaisella luokka-asteella on vuosittain oma kohteensa, jossa se käy koulupäivän aikana. Ohjelman tavoitteena on tutustuttaa lapset ja nuoret omaan kaupunkiin ja edistää kulttuurin ja taiteen tasa-arvoista saavutettavuutta.
Lapset saavat myös säveltää
Lahden kaupunginorkesteri Sinfonia Lahden toimintaan sisältyy lasten ja nuorten musiikkikasvatus. Sävellysprojektien ja koululaiskonserttien kautta lapset saavat tutustua klassiseen musiikkiin.
Sinfonia Lahden Hei me sävelletään -projekteja on tehty vuodesta 1995.
Hei, me sävelletään! -toiminta perustuu alun perin London Sinfoniettan käyttämään workshop-metodiikkaan, josta Sinfonia Lahti on kehittänyt oman toimintamallinsa. Seuraava, eli jo 46. Hei me sävelletään -projekti järjestetään syksyllä.
Musiikin opetusta yli 50 vuotta
Suomen musiikkiluokkatoiminta alkoi Lahdesta vuonna 1966. Musiikkipedagogiikalle otettiin mallia Unkarista ja kehitettiin suomalaiseen peruskouluun sopiva malli. Koululaiset voivat hakeutua musiikkipainotettuun opetukseen kolmannella luokalla. Lahdessa musiikkiopetukseen valitaan noin 60 lasta, eikä aikaisempaa harrastustaustaa tai omaa soitinta tarvita. Painotettua opetusta on mahdollista jatkaa aina lukioon saakka.
Musiikkiluokalla pääpaino on soittamisessa, laulamisessa ja esiintymisessä. Musiikin opetusta on 3-4 tuntia viikossa ja koulussa on mm. bänditoimintaa, kuoroja ja orkestereita.

Lahti is a city of 120,000 residents and a centre for a region of 200,000 people. It has the best of both worlds: the attractiveness, intimate cosiness and originality of a small town, yet the services, efficiency and logistics of a major city.
