EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region Annual Forum gathers 800 international policymakers and experts to Turku, Finland
EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region 11th Annual Forum
16–17 June 2020, Turku, Finland
The EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR) 11th Annual Forum “Our Region, Our Future – Towards a Decade of Innovation and Sustainability” will be organised in Turku, Finland for the second time on 16–17 June 2020. The themes of this year’s Forum are sustainability and innovations. Around 800 policymakers and political and economic experts are expected to attend the Forum held in Logomo, Finland's most prominent event and creative business centre.
The main organisers of the 11th EUSBSR Annual Forum are the City of Turku and the Council of the Baltic Sea States, in collaboration with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland.
“Turku has a long history in working to advance cooperation in the Baltic Sea Region, especially in the fields of environmental protection and sustainability. We are honoured to host the EUSBSR Annual Forum in Turku for the second time. For us this is a show of trust and appreciation for the persevering work done by Turku,” says Mayor of Turku Minna Arve.
What is the European Union Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region?
The European Union Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR) is the first Macro-regional Strategy in Europe. The Strategy was approved by the European Council in 2009 following a communication from the European Commission.
The Strategy is an agreement between the Member States of the EU and the European Commission to strengthen cooperation between the countries bordering the Baltic Sea in order to meet the common challenges and to benefit from common opportunities facing the region.
“The Baltic Sea is vitally important to Finnish people and the Strategy has been an excellent tool to enhance regional cooperation in all fields. The Strategy is divided into three objectives representing the three key challenges of the Strategy: saving the sea, connecting the region and increasing prosperity. Each objective relates to a wide range of policies and has an impact on the other objectives,” says Ambassador for Baltic Sea Affairs Helena Tuuri.
More than 200 projects have been carried out within the framework of the Strategy, delivering concrete results for a clean Baltic Sea, tackling climate change, green energy, sustainable transport, and health and well-being, making Baltic Sea region an attractive place to live and work.
Congress city Turku in Finland attracts major international events
Turku is one of Finland’s leading congress cities and host to dozens of major international association congresses as well as hundreds of national meetings. The historical city centre of Turku is easily accessible, with hotels and festive venues situated in the lush green scenery of the River Aura.
Finland's most prominent event and creative business centre Logomo is the leading venue of congresses and large exhibitions, where accessibility and sustainability are taken into account throughout the execution of the events.
