Slush survey results: 57 percent of startups plan to utilize VR

Helsinki, November 16th 2015 – The official sponsor of Slush Samsung Electronics commissioned for a survey, which asked 400 startups participating in Slush about virtual reality. According to the survey virtual reality is on everyone's mind and 57 percent of companies believe that VR will be a part of their business in the near future.

Although there are few VR devices currently on the market, 52 percent of respondents had already experimented with virtual reality. 68 percent of respondents believe that VR will be used mostly for gaming while 50 percent believe in it's applications for 3D modeling and product demos. Almost all respondents (96 %), however, were unanimous that virtual reality will provide new opportunities for long distance learning and education.

VR opens new doors for marketing

More than half of respondents (52 %) said they would make use of VR technology in their company's marketing and advertising in the near future. As many as 87 percent of respondents said that they themselves were willing to make purchase decisions based on VR experiences. 77 percent of respondents were convinced that the most popular social media services will take advantage of VR technology in the near future.

Immersive experience is the number one feature of VR

An immersive experience was listed as the most exciting feature of virtual reality technology. However, according to the survey users want to experience virtual reality in a familiar and safe environments. Favorite places to uses VR were at home (86 %) and at work (66 %), but already one third (31 %) were willing to strap on VR goggles while on an airplane.

The survey also revealed that an untethered/ mobile VR experience is clearly considered to be more important than processing power and graphics. The majority of respondents (85 %) reported a preference for an untethered VR experience at the expense of processing power. 

The survey was conducted OSG Communications in November 2015. 390 startups companies took part in the survey. 59 percent of survey respondents were software startups.
