The International Idea Competition for Linnanniemi in Turku, Finland, Drew 129 Proposals
A record number of proposals were submitted for the international idea competition for the surroundings of Turku Castle and the western bank area of the mouth of the River Aura. As many as 129 proposals were received by the deadline 28 May. Measured by the number of proposals, the Linnanniemi competition is one of the most interesting objects of regional planning of all times in Finland.
The competition proposals will be presented for everyone to see and comment on through the Kerro kantasi (Voice your opinion) service. As the number of received proposals was record-breaking, it will take some time to publish them.
The jury designated for the competition, chaired by Mayor Minna Arve, aims at making the decision in a way that the result can be made public in September at the latest.
The international idea competition for the Linnanniemi area was open to all and it was organised by the City of Turku in collaboration with the Finnish Association of Architects (SAFA) and the Finnish Association of Landscape Architects (MARK).
The competition area of Linnanniemi is situated in a unique location at the converging point of the city centre, the river and the sea. At the eastern end of the competition area, closest to the city centre, is Forum Marinum – a national specialised museum. In the west, the competition area ends at the tip of the cape where the port area is located.
The purpose of the competition is to identify feasible development options for the area and to obtain a comprehensive overall idea that can be used as a basis for land use planning.
A total of 220,000 euros will be distributed in the competition as prizes and payments for purchased competition entries. The first prize is worth 80,000 euros.
