Mint of Finland is planning to release silver 10- and 20-euro collector coins in honour of designer Ilmari Tapiovaara (1914–1999) on 4 September. Both coins will feature the same motif and were designed by Harri Koskinen, one of the most distinguished Finnish designers of our time. The images of the commemorative coin's design will be on display in the Design Museum in Helsinki.
This year marks the centenary of the birth of designer Ilmari Tapiovaara, one of the most significant Finnish designers of the 20th century, whose best known works include the Domus and Mademoiselle chairs.
Mint of Finland will celebrate Tapiovaara's work by minting a coin which will be released on 4 September 2014. The silver collector coin was designed by Harri Koskinen, one of the top names in Finnish contemporary design, who has been awarded the Pro Finlandia medal of the Order of the Lion of Finland.
"Designing the coin was like sculpting within set limits. The assignment offered me an excellent opportunity, as well as a responsibility, to familiarise myself with Tapiovaara's life and work. I wanted the coin to convey both his professional skill and his versatility," says designer Harri Koskinen.
The images of the collector coin will be on display in the Design Museum's Ilmari Tapiovaara – 100 years exhibition from 6 June to 21 September.
