On 22 October 2015, Mint of Finland will release a collector coin in honour of the 150th anniversary of artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela. A Gallen-Kallela-themed commemorative two-euro coin will also be launched on the same day.
Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865–1931) is known as a pioneer of Finnish arts. He drew his inspiration from Finland's nature, folk culture and ancient legends. This year, 150 years will have passed from his birth.
The obverse of the Akseli Gallen-Kallela collector coin depicts a painter's palette, the descending spirit and the Swan of Tuonela. The figure on the reverse is an homage to Gallen-Kallela's prints. The collector coin is designed by Hannu Veijalainen.
The Akseli Gallen-Kallela collector coin will be struck as silver coins with nominal values of EUR10 and 20. One hundred EUR 10 silver coins will be numbered. The numbered silver coins will be mixed into the total mintage of 10,000 at random. The collector coins will be made of Ag500/1000 silver, with a diameter of 28.5 millimetres and weight of 10 grams.
One hundred EUR 20 coins will be numbered and sold separately packaged in a glass case. The maximum mintage of EUR 20 collector coins is 5,000. The collector coins will be made of Ag925/1000 silver, with a diameter of 38.6 millimetres and weight of 25.5 grams.
The mintage of the commemorative Akseli Gallen-Kallela two-euro coin will be 500,000 pcs.
Exceptionally and as a departure from previous practice, the two-euro coin struck in honour of Akseli Gallen-Kallela will be the third special two-euro coin released into circulation in 2015. According to Communications Director Henna Karjalainen of Mint of Finland, the special two-euro piece interests collectors everywhere in the world. ”The small mintage and special subject make this commemorative coin particularly attractive,” says Karjalainen. The obverse of the special two-euro coin is identical to normal circulation pieces, while the reverse is dedicated to the Gallen-Kallela theme. Two-euro commemorative coins are legal tender in all euro countries.
The Akseli Gallen-Kallela collector coins and two-euro commemorative coin will be available to advance order from the Mint of Finland online shop from 8 October 2015. Actual sales by Mint of Finland and its retailers will start on the collector coin's release date of 22 October 2015. The retail price of silver collector coins with a nominal value of EUR 10 will be EUR 38 and that of the EUR 20 coins EUR 61. The special two-euro coins are available in proof quality for EUR 24.
